ABSTRACT: Formed in 1946, the Iranian dub industry changed the way the Persian-speaking cinema-goers understood foreign films. Ranging from changing titles, plotlines, character names, and even the whole soundtrack to cultural adaptations and political, religious, and moral censorship, many foreign films underwent complete transformations vis-à-vis the dubbing process in Iran. This is particularly noticeable in the case of the Hollywood classics that were re-released several times in different historical periods. Considering the lack of comprehensive studies of the modes of distribution and exhibition of classical Hollywood films in non-Anglo-European contexts, this article explores the various reasons for the alterations that these films went through in Iran both before and after the 1979 Revolution. I argue that national and international politics, traditional norms of representation, and new technological advancements all contributed to a nationally acknowledged role of new authors for these films. I draw forward Gone with the Wind (1939) as a case study that exemplifies the contribution of multiple authors in the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Bio: Currently a PhD student, Babak Tabarrae has an MA in Film Studies from the University of British Columbia (Canada) and an MA in Dramatic Literature from the University of Art (Iran). He is also the head of Film and Theatre Section in the Department of Art and Architecture, The Encyclopaedia of the World of Islam, Tehran, Iran.
